How Creative Production Improves Ecommerce ROAS

Your Meta spend is steady, the targeting hasn't changed, and yet ROAS keeps sliding. Most of the time the audience isn't the problem. The ad is.

We produce video and UGC creative and manage paid media for ecommerce and SME brands across Exeter, Plymouth, Bristol, Bath and the wider South West. Here is how creative production moves ROAS, and what to do about it.

Does ad creative really affect ROAS?

Yes. On Meta and TikTok the creative does most of the targeting work, because the platform uses the ad itself to decide who sees it. A stronger hook and a clearer offer lift click-through rate, which lowers your cost per result without touching the budget.

Why does ecommerce ROAS drop over time?

ROAS usually drops because of creative fatigue: the same people see the same ad until they stop reacting. Common signs include:

•Frequency climbing while click-through rate falls

•Cost per purchase rising week on week with no other change

•Comments turning from questions to people saying they've seen it before

What kind of creative lifts ROAS most?

Short, human, problem-first video usually beats polished brand film in paid social. The pattern we see work for ecommerce brands is simple:

•A hook in the first two seconds that names the problem

•Real people, product in hand, filmed on location rather than in a sterile studio

•One clear offer and one call to action

•Several variations of the hook, so you can learn which opening earns attention

How many creatives should you test?

Aim for a steady flow rather than a big batch. As a general rule of thumb, most ecommerce accounts do well testing three to five new concepts a month, each with a few hook variations, then scaling the winners. Spend too thinly across dozens of ads and none gets enough data to judge.

How does production affect your testing speed?

The faster you can shoot and edit, the faster you learn. A planned shoot day that captures many hooks, product angles and testimonials gives you weeks of testable content from one session, which is far cheaper than commissioning each ad separately.

How Evolution Media approaches creative production for ROAS

We plan the shoot around what the ad account needs to test, not the other way round. Our team films UGC and short-form video, edits multiple hook variations, and runs them through Meta, TikTok and Google, reporting on cost per purchase rather than views. Where landing pages are holding conversion back, our ecommerce web development team fixes that too, so better ads land on a page that converts.

FAQs

What is a good ROAS for ecommerce?

It depends on your margins. Work out your break-even ROAS by dividing 1 by your gross margin, then aim above it. A brand with a 40% margin breaks even at 2.5x.

How often should I refresh ad creative?

Watch frequency and click-through rate rather than the calendar. Many brands refresh every two to four weeks on busy accounts, and less often on smaller budgets.

Does UGC improve ROAS?

Often, because it looks native in the feed and builds trust. It still needs testing against your other formats, as results vary by product and audience.

Is creative more important than targeting?

On modern platforms it usually matters more, because broad targeting lets the algorithm find buyers based on how people respond to the ad.

Can an Exeter agency produce creative for brands outside Devon?

Yes. We shoot on location or in our Exeter base for brands across Plymouth, Bristol, Bath and the wider South West, and work remotely with brands further afield.
