Working in Exeter: Life at Evolution Media

Evolution Media is a video production, performance marketing and ecommerce web development agency based in Exeter, Devon. We work with businesses across Devon and the wider South West, and most weeks you will find us somewhere between our studio, a client's shop floor and a Devon hillside with a camera.

Here is what working in Exeter looks like for us: the team, a typical week, and the local projects we are proud of.

Why is Evolution Media based in Exeter?

Exeter puts us right in the middle of the South West. With the M5 and A30 on our doorstep, a shoot in Plymouth, Torbay, Taunton or Cornwall is a day trip rather than an overnight stay.

It also means clients can come to us. Plenty of our planning meetings happen over a coffee in the studio rather than on a video call, and that is usually where the best ideas start.

Who is on the team?

We are a small team, so the people you meet are the people doing the work:

  • Jake, owner of Evolution Media

  • Llew, Head of Growth, looking after new business and partnerships

  • Lily, Creative Director, covering design, web development and account management

  • Wes, Head of Content and lead videographer

  • Steve, Digital Marketing Manager, running all of our paid media

  • Louis, junior videographer, working alongside Wes on shoots and edits

Exeter is more than an office address for us. In Llew's words:

“I moved to Exeter from South Africa 14 years ago and have worked for, and run, businesses here ever since. What keeps me here is the mix. No two clients are the same, and when the laptop closes you have the coast, the moors and a proper rugby city on your doorstep. I can't think of a better place to live and work.”

What does a typical week look like?

Shoot days. Wes and Louis are out filming on location, from food and drink producers in the South Hams to manufacturers on our own doorstep. Footage comes back to the studio for editing, grading and cutting into versions for each platform.

The podcast studio. Our in-house podcast studio hosts client recordings as well as our own Behind the Brands podcast. Local businesses also book it to create their own audio and video content.

Paid media. Steve manages Meta, Google, TikTok and LinkedIn campaigns. Because the same team makes the content, ads are planned alongside the creative from day one rather than bolted on afterwards.

Websites and ecommerce. Lily and the team build and improve Shopify stores, from small conversion fixes to full rebuilds.

What is West Country Produces?

West Country Produces is a podcast and brand film series we launched to celebrate the makers and growers behind some of the region's best businesses. Each producer in the series gets a podcast episode, a short brand film and a run of social content.

So far the series has featured Salcombe Gin, Roastworks, Devon Rum, PowderKeg and Denhay Bacon, as well as DevonDays Festival. It is our way of putting the spotlight on the people who make the West Country what it is, and new producers join on a rolling basis.

Who do we work with?

Prof & Doc. Prof & Doc is a skincare brand built around watercress. We filmed founder interviews, product videos and brand films, then took over their Amazon advertising, Storefront and A+ Content. In the first month, Amazon revenue rose by 559% and return on ad spend by 46%, compared with the previous four months. Read the full Prof & Doc case study.

Rapid Fusion. Rapid Fusion is an Exeter manufacturer of large-format robotic 3D printing systems. We produced industry whitepapers and ran LinkedIn advertising to put them in front of engineers and buyers, generating a steady flow of qualified leads. Read the full Rapid Fusion case study.

How are we involved in the local business community?

We like being out in the room as much as behind the camera. This season we are exhibiting at both the West Country Business Show and Bizfest, two of the biggest business events in the South West.

At each show, our mini podcast studio will be set up on the stand. Visitors can sit down, record a short conversation about their business and leave with content they can share straight away. It is a simple way to show what we do, and a lot more fun than handing out leaflets.

Llew also recently spoke at pre-event networking for exhibitors, sharing practical ideas on raising awareness before a show, getting more from conversations on the day and following up afterwards. If you are going to either event, come and find us and say hello.

Why work with a marketing agency in Exeter?

  • You can meet us. Studio visits, shoot recces and planning sessions happen in person.

  • We know the area. Tourism peaks, food festivals and quieter winter months all shape when and how campaigns should run.

  • Local content works locally. Footage filmed in places your customers recognise tends to earn more attention than generic stock.

  • One team for content and campaigns. Video, ads and websites are planned together, so nothing gets lost between suppliers.
